In this week's "Travel Tip," I'll share with you my top choice in travel apps. It may surprise you.
Many people think all sorts of fancy smartphone apps will be useful when they travel. Certainly, the app makers want you to believe so. But, that hasn't really been my experience. In my travel experience, the most mundane apps are the most useful. Things like language translators, currency converters, and the like are super practical and come in handy everywhere you go. However, you won't necessarily use a currency converter every day. I'll tell you what you will use, though. Google Maps!
That's right! Google Maps is my top choice. I would never leave home without it, forget about the country! You will no doubt use it every day of your trip, whether you're taking a car, the train, or simply walking around.
Some countries have their own tourist board generated map apps, as well as train schedules apps created by the operators. They're fine, but Google, believe it or not, has always been better.
Plus, the more you use it, the better you'll become at using it. So, whether you're in London or Tokyo, the app will work the same, only with different content. If, on the other hand, you use a new app for every place you visit, you'll not only have to learn the new country, you'll also have to waste time learning the new app!
One other quick point about Google Maps - it has always been more accurate than every other app we have used. In Germany - the land of efficiency and precision - it reported train schedules more precisely than the Deutsche Bahn app! Entschuldigung, Deutschland! ??
