Our three-week extraordinary German adventure was just that! Extraordinary and a thrilling adventure!
We began in Berlin where our German friend from Berlin picked us up and brought us to our first stop - Berlin! Berlin was as exciting and electric as it was dark and thought-provoking. The city is young and alive and fun, but it also does not hide its past. You will definitely see the reminders of Nazism and Communism, but you will also have some of the best food ever and the nightlife is second-to-none, including New York, Las Vegas, London, or anywhere else!
Next, we moved on to the joined towns of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. That was our home base from which we visited The Zugspitze and Schloss Neuschwanstein, as well as took a guided day-tour of Bavaria with our friend Jake (actually from New Orleans, but now an excellent tour guide). A "must see" item to add to your German bucket list, for sure!
After Garmisch-Partenkirchen, we traveled up to Munich ("München" in German), where, among a great many other amazing things, we experienced the world-famous Oktoberfest Celebration! What a thrill indeed! Munich, beyond the Oktoberfest, is a great place to visit, so plan a few days at least. There is just so much to see and do, including the BMW Museum and Factory, the Englischer Garten, tons of art and history museums, and the great Bavarian food and beer!
Next up was Trier, the oldest city in Germany. Trier is a lesser known place in Deutschland, but to me, it was important, as I really enjoy ancient Roman sites, and Trier was one of the largest cities in the Roman Empire.
From Trier, we moved on to the Mosel and Rhine River Valleys for their beautiful nature and, of course, wine! An absolute must is to take a river cruise on one of these two rivers if even just a day trip. We did and it was a highlight of our trip.
Finally, we ended our travels in Cologne ("Köln" in German) for just a day. We took in as much as we could and drank plenty of Kolsch beer. Hey, when in Köln...!!
What an extraordinary adventure! We will definitely go back soon!
